Tromping around in last years 'overflow' garden patch we discovered the remnants of our tiny birdhouse gourd crop laying in the tall grass. At the time of planting we had holiday gifting in mind, forgetting a bit about the time needed for gourds to dry, not knowing that our summer would be mild and it would take three attempts to get these heat loving plants to take, not knowing that after canning 400 pounds of tomatoes in the fall heat that the last thing I would be interested in would be another project from the garden. But, finding these perfectly dried, hiding in the weeds was such a pleasant surprise. We scooped out the seeds, saved them for planting and had a blast decorating our little birdhouses.
And now they hang in the tree in our front yard. Now the kids wait, who will move into their new custom designer home? From seed to seed, we came full circle, what a joy.
